MY TOP 5 WOMENSWEAR TRENDS FOR THIS SPRING/SUMMER ‘17 SEASON

EXPRESS YOURSELF….

IN THE WORDS OF THE ICONIC FASHION LEGEND IRIS APFEL…

“I SAY, DRESS TO PLEASE YOURSELF. LISTEN TO YOUR INNER MUSE AND TAKE A CHANCE. WEAR SOMETHING THAT SAYS ‘HERE I AM!’ TODAY.”

This quote couldn’t be more apt for this spring summer season. There are no rules, it is up to you how you interpret your own individual style which for me as a stylist has made all my styling dreams come true.

I know for a lot of us the spring/summer season fills us with dread.. what will I wear today? It’s cold in the morning but scorching hot by lunchtime and I’m pretty fed up with trying to look cool and fashionable when all I can think about is how hot I am and I’m sure that every shop still have all their radiators on full whack! WELL…. Not this season – it’s your chance to mix and match and layering really is your best friend.

From the amazing pops of pink at Balenciaga to the totally outrageous (my favourite!) mix and match styling from Gucci. To the dreamlike tulle and embroidery at Dior where all your childhood fairy tales come true and then on to the incredibly vibrant colour palette seen at both Max Mara and 3.1 Philip Lim, where you should have no qualms in turning yourself into a real life highlighter – neon is back at the forefront of our wardrobes.

So if your vibe is more mix match or you are just a totally chic minimalistic individual with a passion for colour blocking then you can be safe in the knowledge that every pop of colour, every material, every texture is yours for the taking – have fun with it and enjoy it.

  1. FLOWER TRIP

Dries-Van-Noten-RTW-SS17-Paris-2115-1475076980-mediumbigthumb-1475076980-bigthumbThis is flower power on steroids; forget limiting your floral print to one garment per outfit only, this season it’s all about head to toe florals. I know – total shocker- it’s the summer months and surprise surprise the floral trend comes round once again but this floral print is badder than ever in terms of size, use of colour and no fabric is left untouched and I am definitely including your shoes here too – it’s time to manicure yourself into your ideal floral border.. if that’s something you’ve ever thought about…

Florals really packed a punch at Balenciaga, Dries Van Noten and Gucci with the use of larger print and depth of colour whilst at the likes of Chloé, Erdem and Mcqueen we saw a more subtle interpretation of the print.

HOW TO WEAR THIS TREND;

Be brave, wear a floral print blazer with tailored trousers and floral shoes to match – guaranteed this will look amazing in either statement bright print as well as a more subtle shade. Why not try layering a floral print dress over the same patterned trouser. I always think a cute little co – ord looks so perfectly neat and uniform like, intensifying our summer vibes by using these fun colourful prints that are sure to lift your mood – after all, I am a strong believer in wearing whatever you feel comfortable in and allowing your personality to shine through your own personal style.

  1. TULLE DREAMS

Featuring garments reminiscent of a fairytale setting with all the whimsy and feeling of romance evoking thoughts of a Midsummer Nights Dream, but often featuring an empowering punk rock edge when it comes to styling this balletic trend.

At the Dior couture show, Maria Grazia Chiuri’s debut to the fashion house, we saw a catwalk imagined as somewhat of a fantasy land where our most enchanted dreams turned into dresses. Whilst at the Molly Goddard show which made me want to buy everything and go out partying all night, we saw her amazing use of neon tulle which was totally over the top whilst incorporating a casual aesthetic allowing us to wear this trend both in the daytime and through the night – a functional attribute which is so necessary within our fast paced lives of today.

HOW TO WEAR THIS TREND;

This is a trend which so many of us would be tempted to avoid as it probably makes you think that in order to be included you must wear the bare minimum underneath the endless streams of dreamy tulle, but this is not the case and it is completely up to you how much flesh you have on show.

Personally I see this as a perfect opportunity to layer up in order to achieve a super on trend look with minimal effort… The easiest way to create this pretty punk vibe is to layer a loose fitting tulle dress over jeans and a chilled t – shirt – you don’t want your tulle to be tight it’s all about the oversized, loose fit.

Or dare to bare and style it out with some gorgeously large pants for your night out on the town or your trip to the corner shop – you go girl!

  1. RAINBOW CLASSICS

Think bold and bright and then brighter still with a lot more zing when it comes to this trends saturated colour palette. Bright reds, blues, greens were clear to see on this seasons’ catwalks from the likes of Roland Mouret, Max Mara and Emilia Wickstead to the perfect shade of highlighter yellow depicted at 3.1 Philip Lim. However the real hero of this particular colour palette was the incredible injection of fuchsia seen at the likes of Topshop Unique, Valentino and Balenciaga – and no, this is not your classic pink frilly dress, but creations of empowering structure to add a sense of confidence to your look.

HOW TO WEAR THIS TREND;

The majority of us shy away from bright colours as it can be tricky to know what is acceptable and what can make you look like you’ve “got dressed in the dark” however as you can see there is no need for this cautious attitude.

This is the season where you can wear every colour of the rainbow in any pairing and totally get away with it. Pink with purple, pink with red, orange and blue, blue with red, the list goes on and on but the main message here is wear all the colours all of the time or just add a pop of colour to your more neutral outifit and you’ll definitely be on to a winner.

  1. MINIMALIST CHIC

style-highlight-stella-mccartney-ss17-corset-waist-looks-1165x755cHello and welcome minimalism – you are my favourite. Everyone that knows me knows that I love a solid classic wardrobe piece. This is an ideal trend for all, as these are pieces in your wardrobe that you can mix and match with many items that you already own, thus making it easier for us adhere to the idea of “less is more” which I have always been an avid campaigner for. We’re all guilty of buying too much but by investing in these classic wardrobe pieces it allows us to create the illusion of having a much bigger wardrobe than we actually have.

Stella McCartney is a perfect representation of this trend shown through gorgeous natural fabrics and lines depicted as tanned tones with blues and also khaki featured. Confirming that these really are colours that you can wear with anything, giving you the opportunity to breathe life back into your wardrobe basics section. These simple garments have then been elevated through the process of a much harder design process, as these items are made from ultra luxe fabrics and include more difficult design techniques such as fine- pleating.

HOW TO WEAR THIS TREND;

Styling this trend is pretty simple in the way that these are much more wearable simple garments – it’s how you accessorize them which is the key to really giving your look energy. Be creative with this by matching all of your accessory colours against a single block colour garment to create a much more impactful look.

Some of you might think that this trend sounds terribly boring but you would be surprised what a tight belt can do to a utilitarian look. This is a trend to have fun with, play around and mix and match. Little details make a big impact in the form of a ruffle, rouched shoulders or a paperbag – waist. By adding a classic garment such a blazer to a more modern ensemble immediately makes it look more expensive. This is minimalism with a unique twist, the twist being it’s totally up to you!Stella-McCartney-Spring-2017-Ready-To-Wear-

  1. ECLECTICISM AT ITS FINEST

AeGuccipave1Gucci is the superstar of this arena. Alessandro Michele is a constant inspiration of mine. He has managed to take our everyday wardrobe choices and inject a huge dose of eccentricity. The thought of this would usually mean that these items would be completely unwearable in order to reach this level of eclecticism, however from this seasons’ catwalks we saw that this was not entirely the case and that these items were in fact much more wearable – fab news for us!

HOW TO WEAR THIS TREND;

This is indubitably my vibe. A statement jacket with a simple logo tee – yes please! That’s probably the easiest approach to this trend, or just think about accessorizing massively. Anything goes, you only have to look at the accessories at Gucci to appreciate this. Ornate and amazing, all of my favourite things.

Don’t try and enforce all the usual rules when it comes to pairing prints, you want them to clash, this goes for the fabrics too. Pair a printed skirt with a clashing tee and add a belt to blend the look. The most important thing to remember – none of the established fashion rules had derestriction here, anything goes. Both clothing and accessories are colourful, bold and bright so load on the accessories and continue on to clash central.gucci-ss17-behind-the-scenes-00
